Kindle version – not funny, so what’s the point?, November 10, 2011

Cat Cartoon-A-Day: 2012 Day-to-Day Calendar

I downloaded this when it was free for Kindle, just to see what it would be like. I normally love cat jokes as I’m a cat-lover who loves a good cat-joke, but didn’t find any of these to be terribly funny. (Look at the cover image “If you really loved me, you’d buy me gourmet cat food”… yeah, that’s about as funny (or, more accurately, not-funny) as most of the inside pages I looked at. Maybe a few of them were mildly amusing, but most… not so much.

There is no functionality to them – meaning that on the Kindle, you can’t use them as you normally would use a calendar – to write down important dates, appointments, to-do lists, notes, etc. All you do is flip through the pages to look at them. Cartoon pages alternate with a mostly-blank page with the date written at the top. It won’t automatically open to the correct date No “tearing off” the pages either, just turning pages as you would in a book.

So, in my opinion, these are pretty much just a waste of good Kindle space. If I want cat humor, I’ll just buy a *funny* book of cat humor that actually makes me laugh, and if I want to know the date, I’ll look at my computer, TV, watch, iPod, phone, or date-book – or the fully-functional Day Planner and Calendar (by Magellan Interactive – I’ve tried several and this is my favorite). All of which are much easier than finding this and opening it, flipping through pages…

I’ve long been a huge fan of The New Yorker cartoons. They are almost uncanny in combining the visual and verbal aspects of humor. The combination of the two makes for a really good joke.

This 2012 Calendar/Planner presents some of the most amusing, and largely understated, cartoons from the New Yorker’s collection. The calendar is organized in terms of the weeks, and there is one cartoon per week. There is enough space for each date to write in a few notes or appointments, but if you are someone who keeps a fairly packed schedule than you will find this quite inadequate.

Cartoonists that are featured in this collection include Joe Dator, Michael Maslin, Paul Noth, David Sipress, Tom Toro, Christopher Weyant, Bob Eckstein, and many others.

Overall, this is a very functional and entertaining calendar that is quite adequate for most people’s scheduling needs.

I did go through and read most of the cartoons here and as I said, some of them did bring a chuckle and it was a pleasing experience. I am not at all sure if I would have been quite as pleased or snickered quite as much after I had parted with that much money. But hey, to each his or her own.
